At least 100 people were injured while 4 others critically after a makeshift gallery collapsed in Suryapet on Monday. Most of the injured were spectators at the 47th Junior National Kabaddi Tournament inaugurated by the Minister for Energy Jagadishwar Reddy at the police grounds in Suryapet town.
The national event slated to be held from March 22-27 wherein sportsmen and women attended in large numbers from various parts of the country. According to the Suryapet SP Bhaskaran, the incident occurred as the gallery was weak. More than 3000 spectators said to have attended the event while more than a thousand people seated on the dais at the time of the incident.
All those injured were shifted to various public and private hospitals in Suryapet. Those critically injured were shifted to Hyderabad for further treatment. The real cause of the accident will be known only after completition of the investigation, said SP Bhaskaran.
However, all the VIPs went away as the inauguration was over and the games began when the incident occurred. Later the Minister, on coming to know the incident rushed to the spot and called on the victims in hospitals.
Meanwhile, the Private hospitals association decided to extend free medical help to all those victims following an appeal made by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). Minister Jagadeeshwar Reddy also announced that his government will extend all support in protecting the well being of the victims of the stage collapse.
