At least 12 were drowned and 29 others were missing when a tourist boat capsized in the swollen Godavari river near Papi Kondalu in East Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh this afternoon.
The boat was carrying 63 persons including 11 crew members when the boat was capsized at Kachhuluru between Devipatnam and Papikondalu. Over 23 passengers, were rescued. Initial reports said it was being run by the Andhra Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation.
The passengers include 23 from Hyderabad, 11 from Warangal and the rest are said to be from Visakhapatnam. The local source said that 11 bodies have been recovered and efforts are on to trace the remaining persons as the Godavari is in spate.
According to Minister Avanthi Srinivas, the boat named as Royal Vashishta belongs to one Kodigudla Venkata Ramana and is being run in this corridor without any license from the AP Tourism.
Meanwhile, the Andhra Pradesh government announced an exgratia of Rs 10 lakh to each of those dead in the mishap. The entire government machinery including a helicopter was pressed into service to rescue the missing persons and aid the rescued passengers.
