14 dead as tempo hits divider on National Highway in Kurnool

In yet another major road accident, at least 14 people died on the spot and 4 others injured critically when a Tempo Tracks in which they were travelling hit a divider and went off the road only to hit a lorry coming from the opposite direction on the other side of the National highway at Kurnool.

The accident occurred at around 3.30 am today at Madhapur in Veldurthi mandal of Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh. All the victims were said to belong to one family from Chittoor district.

Police took up the rescue operations soon after the incident with the help of local. However, it became tough for them to rescue as most of their bodies were moulded beyond recognition. Police had to use the crane to retrieve the dead and the injured.

Kurnool Collector and Superintendent of Police who rushed to the spot said that the driver first hit the divider before it was tossed off to the other side of the road crossing the divider only to hit a lorry coming from the opposite direction. This only shows the vehicle was at high speed and the driver must have dosed off resulting in the accident.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy expressed deep sorrow for the loss of human life, including women and children, in the road mishap at Madapuram and instructed the district officials to take expedite relief and medical help. He also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members and wished speedy recovery of the injured.

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has expressed grief over the loss of lives in a road accident at Kurnool district, Andhra Pradesh.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “The road accident in Andhra Pradesh’s Kurnool district is saddening. In this hour of sadness, my thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. I hope that the injured recover at the earliest.”
