At least 16 migrant workers were killed and 5 others were injured seriously when a goods train ran them down while walking on the tracks near Karnad between Aurangabad and Jalna section, according to the Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the South Central Railway.
The CPRO said all the injured were shifted to Aurangabad civil hospital. The incident occurred when the migrant labourers hailing from Madhya Pradesh were walking to their home town Jalna in Maharashtra. They reportedly stopped by for a break and fell asleep on the tracks when the train hit them.
However, the initial reports said that the victims are the workers of a nearby steel factory and reportedly moving to their native places. There were even rumours that they have committed a mass suicide unable to bear the sufferings due to lockdown. Even if assuming that they have committed suicide, but their bodies were thrown around indicating that it was an accident.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddav Thackery has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh to the kin of each deceased. The Chief Minister’s Office took to Twitter and said: “Rs 5 lakhs each has been announced as ex gratia to families of the deceased in Karmad (Aurangabad) train accident.
