At least 3 persons died including a Constable identified as Ratan Singh died in pro and anti-CAA clashes today on the second day of the clashes that erupted last evening. A DCP rank official and Head Constable Mohd Saleem too were injured in the incident.
According to police and media reports, two others who died were identified as Mohd Sultan, a protestor and an auto driver Shahid Alvi. Sultan died of heavy bleeding after a bullet hit his leg while Alvi died after a bullet hit his stomach. The clashes between pro and anti CAA continued despite police deployed heavy forces and imposed nakabandi between Maujpura and Jaffrabad railway stations. The Delhi Metro had stopped its services between the two stations.
Majority of the shops were shut owning to the clashes. Stone pelting incidents reported till late in the evening. Several vehicles including a fire tender were torched and 2 houses were burnt down in Chandbagh area of Jaffrabad locality.
Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Aravind Kejriwal urged the Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to restore normalcy following the ongoing visit of the US President Donal Trump.
The police issued a statement in the afternoon announcing prohibitory orders and appealing to residents in Delhi’s Northeast District to maintain peace and harmony and not to believe in any false rumours.
The trouble began when the 500 women protesters began sit-in dharna again this morning at Maujpur provoking the pro-CAA protestors to began pelting stones at them. Police had to fire tear gas shells several times to quell the mob.
