At least 9 COVID patients said to have died in a major fire that broke out in Hotel Swarna Palace in Vijayawada which is being used as a temporary COVID centre by Ramesh hospital.
According to our correspondent, 7 dead bodies have arrived at Vijayawada Government mortuary while 2 more bodies are yet to reach the hospital. Most of them said to have died after they jumped from the windows of the 5th floor. Over 30 COVID patients are undergoing treatment in the Swarna Palace hotel which was taken on lease by the Ramesh hospital to meet the growing demand
Police Commissioner V Srinivasulu said that fire took place around 5.45 am in the morning said to be due to electrical short circuit. The Fire personnel received information only at 5.45 am and they arrived within 5 minutes. However, it is suspected that fire broke out well before that.
The Director-General of Police Gautham Sawang is set to visit the scene of the accident. Meanwhile, Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Rao expressed shock at the accident and ordered the officials to extend all possible help to the patients who are being shifted to other hospitals.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the loss of lives due to fire at a COVID Centre in Vijayawada.
In a tweet, the Prime Minister said: “Anguished by the fire at a COVID Centre in Vijayawada. My thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that the injured recover as soon as possible. Discussed the prevailing situation with AP CM @ysjagan Ji and assured all possible support.”
The DGP Gautham Sawang visited the Swarna Jayanthi hotel and inquired about the incident. He spoke to the hotel and the hospital management.
