ACB arrests Acham Naidu in ESI scam, Babu calls it ‘official kidnap’


Former Minister Achhenaidu was taken into custody by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) sleuths early this morning in connection with the Rs988 crore ESI scam in Andhra Pradesh


He was picked up from his residence in his Nedella village in Tekkali Mandal of Srikakulam district around 5.45 early this morning. A host of officials in about 15 cars arrived in the village only to whisk him away to Vijayawada.

According to the ACB authorities the former Minister Achham Naidu along with former Director of ESI Ramesh Kumar, and Assistant Director from Rajahmundry Dr Vijaya Kumar were identified as the prime accused in the Rs150 crore scam out of Rs 988 Crore of the total ESI scam.

Revealing the details, here today, an ACB official said in Visakhapatnam today that one of the Directors Ramesh Kumar was taken into custody in Tirupathi today while Dr Vijaya Kumar was already in custody. They said the arrests had been followed after it was established during investigations that the scam took place in connivance with the former Minister along with other officials.

The officials said that it was found Acham Naidu had involved in illegal purchases of medical equipment such as bio-metric, lab testing tools, surgical items, furniture etc at higher prices to the tune of Rs 150 crore out of total purchases made up to Rs 988 crore. They purchased the equipment after hiking the prices from 50% to 120% roughly by raising fake invoices.

Chandra Babu Reaction

The arrest of Achham Naidu evoked sharp reaction from Telugu Desam party leaders including its Chief Chandra Babu Naidu who termed the arrest of his MLA as an official kidnap by the ruling YSRCP government. “The kidnap of our MLA just before 3 days ahead of the assembly session shows the intention of the government”, he said and conducted a video conference with his senior party leaders.
