The Union Government led by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi has decided to appoint General Bipin Rawat, as the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) with effect from December 31, 2019
The post was recently created to give advises to the President and Prime Minister on the matters of Defence and national security. The orders have been issued to this effect on Monday.
General Bipin Rawat was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1978 and is currently serving as Chief of the Army Staff since January 01, 2017. He will be in the new post until 3 years from his date of appointment or till he attains the age of 65 whichever is early.
Rawat paid homage to the martyrs at the National War Memorial on Monday. He is set to take over the office of CDS on January 1, 2020. Speaking on the occasion he said: “I demit the office of Chief of Army staff, I wish to convey my gratitude to the soldiers, rank and file of Indian Army who have stood steadfast under challenging circumstances.”
He also conveyed his best wishes to General Manoj Naravane, who succeeded him as the 28th Army chief of India. Bipin Rawat is decorated with PVSM, UYSM, AVSM, YSM, SM, VSM and ADC to the Supreme Commander.
