The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced the cadidature of Dr Panugothu Ravi Kumar, a former government medical doctor, as its candidate for contesting in the ensuing Nagarjuna Sagar by elctions.
The party has decided on his candidature following a debate in the party to attract the votes of the tribal community whose population is predominant in the constituency. Dr Ravi Kumar hails from Palugu Thanda in Tripuraram mandal in the native constituency and commands respect and enjoys the sympathy of his tribesmen.
Political pandits perceive the decision as a strategic move to take on the strong opposition candidates both from ruling TRS and opposition Congress. TRS candidate Nomula Bhagat and Congress septuagenarian Jana Reddy are considered to be the strongest candidates in the fray. Nomula Bhagat is a son of the sitting MLA late Nomula Narasaiah of the same party while Jana Reddy is a 7-time MLA and former Home Minister of united AP. Now with the entry of Dr Ravi Naik, a triangle fight appears to be imminent in the ensuing elections.
