Utter Pradesh unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday announced the name of its party spokesperson Dr Syed Zafar Islam as its candidate for the upcoming by-election for Rajya Sabha seat from Uttar Pradesh.
Dr Zafar Islam is a National Spokesperson on Political and Economic Affairs in BJP party. He is also the Director of Air India, Ex investment Banker, and the former Managing Director of Deutsche Bank.
The election became necessary as the seat became vacant with the death of Rajya Sabha MP Amar Singh who died on August 1 due to kidney failure in Singapore. Zafar Islam Islam is a former banker and said to have played a key role in bringing former Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia to the BJP.
The decision has come as a rude shock to the Congress and Samajwadi Party who have been criticising that a Muslim would not get a fair chance in the saffron party. Political analysts say the election of Islam to the upper house will only be a formality as the BJP enjoys a comfortable majority in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.
The polling will be held on September 11 as per the election schedule announced by the Election Commission of India. The last date for filing of nominations will be on September 1 and the withdrawal is on September 2nd.
