HC issues notices on Thumbay hospital incident, private hospitals fleecing

A division bench of the Telangana High Court issued notices to the state government seeking an explanation for the Thumbay hospital incident wherein a government medical officer was locked up for want of COVID bill.

Reacting on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by an advocate Srikrishna Sarma, the division bench headed by the Chief Justice RS Chouhan took the matter seriously and opined that the fleecing of COVID patients by private hospitals going unhindered in Telangana with government seems to be giving a deaf ear to the incidents.

He also issued notices to the principal secretary, Medical and Health, Commissioners and Directors of State and Central Medical Councils besides notices to Private hospitals such as Care, Medicare, Yashoda, Sunshine etc. to furnish their explanation before July 14.

While hearing the argument, CJ opined that “it seems private hospitals are not adhering to the government tariff by charging heavily violating the government orders. This is highly objectionable and action needs to be taken”. He also wanted the government to explain as to what action the government had taken against Thumbay hospital as locking up a patient for want bills is a serious crime.
