The yesterday’s Mallapuram incident in Kerala in which a pregnant elephant was made to die after she was fed with pineapple filled with firecrackers that exploded in her mouth leading to the inevitable tragedy evoked a large scale condemnation not just across the country but also the world over.

The most heinous and inhuman episode took the world by surprise making everyone demanding in unison to punish the culprits. In fact who are they? Where they are hiding? Have they been identified? are the questions now stand before us as no action has been initiated yet despite Chief Minister Pinarai Vijayan’s assurance of doing justice followed by Union Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar’s warning of stern action against culprits.

Several celebrities raised their voice against the inhuman act of killing the mother elephant and its foetus inside the womb. Ratan Tata tweeted “Such criminal acts against innocent animals are no different than acts of meditated murder against other humans. Justice needs to prevail”.

Cricketer Virat Kohli tweeted: “Appalled to hear about what happened in Kerala. Let’s treat our animals with love and bring an end to these cowardly acts”.

However, the animal activist Maneka Gandhi was furious: “Mallapuram is known for its intense criminal activity especially with regard to animals. No action has ever been taken against a single poacher or wildlife killer so they keep doing it. So I can only suggest you call/email and ask for action”

It’s not the celebrities alone, Srinivas, a common man and a resident of Devinagar near Neredmet in Hyderabad announced a Rs 2 lakh cash prize to those whoever gives clue to help catch the killers of the elephant.

The dead body of a pregnant elephant being retrieved from the pond in Mallapuram in Kerala today.

It may be recalled that the elephant wandered into Mallapuram village in search of food. She trusted everyone and ate the pineapple that was offered by some goons which exploded in her mouth. It was so powerful that her tongue and mouth were badly damaged and the elephant slated to give birth in 18 to 20 months, walked around in the village with bleeding injury and writhing with pain and hunger. Finally, she went into a water pond to escape from flies and get relief from the pain. She stood in the waters throughout the night only to breathe her last by next morning.

She didn’t harm a single human being even when she ran in searing pain in the streets of the village. She didn’t crush a single home. Still, she became the victim of demons in human form. Some people don’t deserve to LIVE.
