The doctors at Medicover Hospitals have performed a first-of-its-kind rare surgical procedure to save the life of a 17-year-old Covid patient.

According to the senior Cardio-Thoracic Surgeon, Dr Pramod Reddy performed the rare operation to remove the puss formed around the left lung of the COVID victim, Prem Kumar. Doctors said that Prem Kumar, a native of Ranga Reddy district of Telangana State was brought to Medicover Hospitals on complaining of acute chest pain. The patient was suffering for two weeks, and earlier was treated at a local hospital, but the condition aggravated with time. And on arrival at Medicover Hospitals, the patient was tested for Covid-19, and he was found a positive carrier of coronavirus.

Dr Pramod Reddy said: “When an individual contracts coronavirus, his or her respiratory system is compromised; and even, in this case, we presume that the victim, who was Covid-19 positive, suffered further complications arising due to bacterial infection. The puss formed around the left lung, making the patient feel breathlessness and pain in the chest, necessitated decortication.

Post decortication, the patient was treated using antiviral for Covid-19, and anti-bacterial drugs for the puss. Subsequently, the patient developed antibodies for coronavirus; and once the infected lung got restored to its normalcy, the patient was discharged to lead his regular daily routine. Culture study on the puss was also performed to assess the nature of bacteria, which turned out to be a regular form of Staphylococcus bacteria,” added Dr Pramod.
