The Nampally Criminal Court on Tuesday acquitted the notorious LeT bomb-maker Syed Abdul Karim alias Tunda from the charges of planting bombs during the 1998 Ganesh festival in the city.

The court acquitted him following the failure of the police to present substantial evidence to prove their charges of his role in the serial blasts that rocked the city. He was also facing several other charges which also could not be proved. Hence, the court has decided to acquit the 72-year-old Lashkar-e-Taiba militant.

He is a hardcore fundamentalist militant and was accused of masterminding over 40 bombings in India. He was arrested by Indian authorities on 16 August at the India-Nepal border.
