National Press Day: TUWJ protests against curbing Media freedom

The Telangana State Union of Working Journalists (TUWJ) today warned the Central government of dire consequences if any attempt is made to curtail the media freedom in the country.


The leaders of the TUWJ staged a protest in front of the Central Labour Commissioner’s office at Nallakunta here today in connection with the National Press Day and submitted a memorandum to the Union Labour Minister to this effect through its Deputy Commissioner TK Thomas.

Speaking on the occasion, the President of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) K Srinivas Reddy expressed concern over the Centre’s move to do away with the Working Journalist Act and bring in another act to replace it. He took objections at any attempt to curb media freedom in the name of regulations.

The TUWJ Secretary K Virahat Ali called upon journalist fraternity to gear up to face the forthcoming onslaught on the freedom of the press by the Union Government. “It is shame on part of the government to take the media into their fold”, he said.

IJU secretary Y Narender Reddy also spoke on the occasion. The others who attended the programme include IJU Executive Committee Member Kalluri Satyanarayana, State EC members Habib Jilani, A Rajesh, Secretary Telangana Photo Journalists Association Hari, HUJ leaders Gouse, Srinivas, Shiga Dayakar Goud, Upendra etc.
