In a startling development on Sunday, at least 17 Jawans of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) were found to have been killed and 14 others injured during a fierce encounter took place in Sukma district of the Chhattisgarh state.
The encounter took place on Saturday evening between the CRPF men and the Naxals during a combing operation. Another 14 jawans who were injured have already been shifted to the hospitals in Rayapur.
Initially, the officers found that over 17 jawans were missing after the encounter on Saturday. However, they could not be traced out until the next day on Sunday wherein additional forces launched a search operation for the missing personnel. All the 17 bodies were recovered from different places near the encounter site.
Reacting sharply to the gory incident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the mayhem by the Naxals and offered his condolences while praising the sacrifices made by the armed forces. “The country will not forget your sacrifices”, tweeted the PM adding that ‘he would pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in the incident”.
Meanwhile, Union Minister for Home G Kishan Reddy expressed his anguish at the killings. “My deepest condolences to all the families and I condemn the cowardly act by the Naxals”, he tweeted.
Chief Minister Bhupesh Bhagel paid rich tributes to the martyred policemen by placing a wreath on their bodies at the CRPF headquarters in Rayapur today. He later visited the hospital where the injured cops undergoing treatment for injuries.
