Ophthalmologist arrested in Bengaluru for links with ISIS

NIA arrested Ophthalmologist from Bengaluru Abdul Rahman

A 28-year-old ophthalmologist hailing from Basavangundi in Bengaluru Abdur Rahman was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on charges of conspiring with Islamic State operatives.

According to NIA, Abdur Rahman working as an Ophthalmologist at MS Ramaiah Medical College, Bengaluru had visited an ISIS medical camp in Syria in early 2014 for treatment of ISIS terrorists and stayed there for 10 days. A case to this effect was registered with the Delhi Police Special Cell in March 2020, after his name was revealed by a Kashmiri couple Jahanzaib Sami Wani and his wife Hina Bashir Beigh from Okhla Vihar, Jamia Nagar in Delhi.

It may be recalled, the couple were found to have affiliation with ISKP, which is a banned terrorist organisation and is a part of ISIS. The couple were said to be in touch with the notorious ISIS activist Abdullah Basith lodged in Tihar jail in another NIA case and they have been acting on his instructions.

The NIA has also arrested two more accused Sadiya Anwar Sheikh and Nabeel Siddick Khatri, both residents of Pune, in this same case for being part of the conspiracy to further the activities of ISIS/ISKP in India and to carry out subversive activities under the garb of anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) protests.
