Chairperson of the National Commission of Women (NCW) Rekha Sharma has sought apologies from the makers of the film, ‘Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl’, for what she called portraying the Indian Air Force in a negative light and ordered to stop the screening of the movie on Netflix.
Rekha Sharma tweeted, “The real Gunjan Saxena must come out and clarify whether the gender discrimination shown in the movie is for real? Being from Army background I can never imagine defence officers behaving like goons. Officer or not, women are always getting their due respect in forces.”
Later, the real Gunjan Saxena said in a statement that she received support from her male colleagues and got equal opportunities like her male counterparts at the Indian Air Force (IAF). Quoting her tweet, the NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma tweeted again, “If that is so, the filmmaker must apologise and discontinue the screening. Why showing something which is portraying our own forces in a bad light especially when it’s not true.”
Earlier, the defence ministry also expressed its displeasure over the film and issued blanket orders for the filmmakers in the country to seek prior permission to make any visual documentation on the armed forces.
