Updates: Toll reaches 18 in Air India plane crash in Kozhikode


The death toll in last night’s Air India plane crash rose to 18 with 16 more people succumbing to their injuries while undergoing treatment in hospitals in Kozhikode in Kerala.

It may be recalled, that an Air India flight from Dubai carrying 191 passengers including 11 crew members had met with an accident after it skidded off the runway killing 2 pilots on the spot injuring several others. 16 people said to have been succumbed till now while the condition of other 17 members said to be critical. However, the rest of the passengers had a miraculous escape in the gory incident.


Meanwhile, top officials and a team of technical experts from Director-General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) both from Delhi and Mumbai have arrived at Kozhikode to inquire to the causes that led to the accident.

It is the second such major accident occurred since 2010 wherein Air India Express flight from Dubai skidded off the tabletop runway resembling it in Mangalore killing 158 people. The table-top runways are said to build on high altitude with steep drops on 2 or 3 sides at least due which Boeing-307 skidded from the runway and nose-dived into the 35-deep gorge. As a result, the plane got broke into two pieces in the middle and the front portion was totally mangled beyond recognition killing 2 pilots on the spot.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri is seen visiting the accident site today.


The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the plane accident in Kozhikode.

In a tweet, the Prime Minister said, “Pained by the plane accident in Kozhikode. My thoughts are with those who lost their loved ones. May the injured recover at the earliest. Spoke to Kerala CM @vijayanpinarayi Ji regarding the situation. Authorities are at the spot, providing all assistance to the affected.”
